I wish to lend my support to the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease because I agree with the following:
Petition to the 2008 Presidential Candidates
We, the undersigned, are concerned that our nation's health care system does a better job taking care of us after we are sick than it does keeping us healthy and preventing illnesses. Chronic diseases are the number one cause of death and disability in the U.S. – accounting for 70 percent of all deaths and more than 75 percent of the $2 trillion our nation spent on health care during 2005.
The good news is that the vast majority of the death and disability caused by chronic disease is preventable or could be alleviated through better management of disease – if only our nation took the right steps.
We ask that you, as a national leader and possibly the next President of the United States, join us in supporting health care and other public policies that proactively address this crisis.
If elected President, we ask that you work with Congress to implement policies that help prevent chronic disease before it occurs so that together we can reduce the cost in lives and dollars of this largely preventable crisis.
