The Crisis
Chronic diseases are the leading cause of death and disability in Iowa. With more than one million Iowans suffering from at least one chronic disease, the state has reached a chronic disease crisis.
The Implications
The Iowa chronic disease crisis is affecting both residents and state funding. Nearly one-quarter of Iowans suffer from heart-related diseases, including obesity, hypertension, and high cholesterol, and the numbers are rising according to a recent study by the Lewin Group.
And it doesn't just stop there. In addition to the profound effects of chronic disease on Iowans, the state is experiencing significant financial burdens. Chronic diseases cost the state billions of dollars -- total costs related to chronic disease, including direct expenditures (e.g., health care costs) and indirect costs (e.g., lost productivity) amount to $7.6 billion.
